Growing Up in IBLP

Jinger Duggar Vuolo has candidly labeled her upbringing in the Institute in Basic Life Principles (IBLP) as “cult-like”. This Christian organization, founded by Bill Gothard in 1961, imposed strict rules and fear-based teachings that left Jinger terrified of the outside world. Gothard’s teachings emphasized women’s obedience to their husbands, shunned pop culture, and dictated conservative dress codes. Jinger noted, “Fear was a huge part of my childhood”.

Throughout her youth, she debunked music with drums, dancing, dating, and was taught to avoid certain friendships. The rigid rules, accompanied by allegations of abuse against Gothard and his resignation in 2014, prompted Jinger to question these authoritative doctrines.

The Turning Point: Questioning Faith

Jinger began her journey of inquiry and introspection in 2017, eventually leading her to publicly detach from IBLP’s teachings. Her memoir “Becoming Free Indeed: My Story of Disentangling Faith From Fear,” is a detailed account of untangling faith from the fear instilled in her. Set to be released on January 31, it chronicles her metamorphosis and the challenges she faced when confronting the expectations of family and faith.

Jinger openly admits that fear was not only a pillar of her childhood, but also something she saw deeply impact the lives of her peers within the IBLP community. Cultivating anxieties and fear due to the teachings, Vuolo recalls feeling uncertain about God’s expectations. Distancing herself from that environment, she reasoned that many doctrines she absorbed were not true to biblical scripture.

Life After Leaving IBLP

After leaving the controlling grip of her upbringing, Jinger relocated, first to Texas, then to the bustling and largely contrasting city of Los Angeles in 2019. Finding herself, she also found her voice in husband Jeremy Vuolo’s encouragement: “He wasn’t going to let me stay there… He said, ‘I want to know who you are. I want to know what you think about this topic. I want to know what’s going on inside your mind.’” She realized disagreements do not mean rejection, setting a precedent for honest discourse.

Although her relationship with family, particularly with her father, remains “complicated”, the key to her journey and newfound maturity has been maintaining loving relationships despite differing viewpoints. “[Gothard’s] teachings in a nutshell, are based on fear and superstition, and leave you in a place where you feel like, ‘I don’t know what God expects of me,'” she noted, emphasizing the transformative power of moving beyond fear.
