In a shocking act of violence, 38-year-old Cody Balmer has been arrested for allegedly attempting to burn down Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro’s official residence while the governor’s family was asleep inside. The early-morning arson attack is being investigated as both a potential political and religious hate crime, as evidence surfaces linking the suspect to anti-Biden rhetoric and possible antisemitic motives.
Calculated Attack Targets Governor’s Family
According to state police, Balmer broke into the Governor’s Mansion at Fort Indiantown Gap shortly after 2 AM armed with homemade incendiary devices. Authorities described him as “methodical” and “deliberate” during the assault, which left the historic residence heavily damaged.
Governor Shapiro, his wife, and three of their four children were inside the residence at the time but were safely evacuated thanks to quick response from state police and fire crews. The attempted murder charges reflect the seriousness of the threat to the Shapiro family.
Lieutenant Colonel George Bivens noted:
“He moved through it without a lot of hurry. He had a plan, and he executed it with disturbing calm.”
Political and Religious Motives Under Scrutiny
What makes this case particularly troubling is the suspect’s background. Investigators uncovered dozens of social media posts in which Balmer expressed violent political hatred, including direct threats against President Biden and aggressive language targeting Democrats.
In one post, Balmer wrote:
“Biden supporters shouldn’t exist.”
Another post chillingly stated:
“RIP Joe Biden… whoops, that’s in May. #notmypresident.”
🚨 JUST IN: Trump issues new statement on the arson and attempted m*rder of Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro.

Even more disturbing, the attack came hours after Governor Shapiro—who is Jewish—posted a Passover message on social media. While authorities haven’t officially labeled the incident as antisemitic, the timing and context are fueling speculation that religious hatred may have played a role.
Balmer now faces charges including attempted murder, aggravated arson, terrorism, and hate crimes under Pennsylvania law. A federal investigation is also underway to explore potential domestic terrorism ties.
Security Breakdown Sparks Public Concern
The brazen nature of this attack raises serious concerns about security at gubernatorial residences. The Governor’s Mansion, in operation since 1968, was believed to be secure—but Balmer’s ability to infiltrate it and launch an attack has forced state and federal authorities to review protection protocols for elected officials.

Shapiro, considered a rising Democratic star and a potential 2028 presidential contender, has remained composed in the aftermath, thanking first responders for saving his family’s lives.
“This was an attack not just on me, but on all public servants and their families,” Shapiro said in a statement.
As political tensions continue to escalate across the country, this event serves as a sobering reminder of the real-world consequences of unchecked radicalization, and the urgent need to secure those who serve in public office.
