Romania’s political landscape faces turmoil as President Klaus Iohannis resigns amid a controversial election annulment and rising far-right influence. The Constitutional Court’s decision to void the recent presidential race, where Calin Georgescu emerged victorious, has sparked nationwide protests and accusations of Russian meddling. Iohannis’s departure marks a critical juncture for Romania’s future, particularly concerning its stance on traditional values and national sovereignty.
Iohannis Steps Down to Avoid Crisis
Romanian President Klaus Iohannis announced his resignation, effective February 12, to prevent a looming political crisis. His decision comes after serving as president since 2014 and facing an impending impeachment vote initiated by ultranationalist parties and some MPs from the Save Romania Union.
Iohannis criticized the impeachment move as unnecessary and potentially chaotic, given his nearing term end. He warned that such action would disrupt discussions on rescheduling presidential elections and harm Romania’s international reputation, especially as an EU and NATO member.
Far-Right Candidate’s Controversial Victory
The resignation follows the Constitutional Court’s annulment of the presidential election results, where Calin Georgescu won amid allegations of Russian interference. Georgescu, a far-right candidate, is currently polling at 40% despite these serious allegations.

Georgescu’s lawyers have requested the Constitutional Court to resume the second round of the presidential election. Meanwhile, the coalition government has suggested new presidential elections for May 4, with a potential second round on May 18.
Political Fallout and Public Reaction
Iohannis faced criticism from far-right opposition and protests supporting Georgescu. Clashes occurred between Georgescu supporters and police following the resignation announcement, highlighting the deep divisions within Romanian society.
“To spare Romania and its citizens from this crisis, I am resigning from the office of President of Romania. I will leave office the day after tomorrow, 12 February.” – Klaus Iohannis
Elena Lasconi of the USR criticized the timing of Iohannis’ resignation and called for institutional realignment. Conversely, George Simion of the AUR party expressed satisfaction, suggesting Iohannis would have been impeached otherwise.
